ARTIFICE PRESS LAUNCHES NEW BOOK CHOREOGRAPHING SPACE BY e+i STUDI

This October, Artifice Press is releasing Choreographing Space,a reflection on the work and practices of e+i studios by its founders, Eva Perez de Vega and Ian Gordon.

The book is divided into four sections, organised not by chronology but by what Eva and Ian describe as the ‘genus’of their projects: the ideas, intents and hopes which link each project. Each section starts with a philosophical text which informs the questions and concepts raised in the following projects and concludes with a section focusing on the future potential of one of the projects in a post-extinction world.

These speculative sections represent not just an awareness of the ecological considerations which must be central to modern architectural practice as we face climate catastrophe, but also of the non-animal life which will interact with these constructions, including an exploration how one day the “eastern cougar and short-eared owl might flourish” even in spaces like New York’s China Town.

The book is intended for all readers, from those focusing on the philosophical ideas to those interested in the concrete architectural details, and especially for students of architecture. Both Eva and Ian have worked as educators throughout their careers and aim to show how inspirations as seemingly unrelated to architecture as dance and skateboarding can provide valuable avenues for exploration.

With sections on projects as diverse as the creation of temporary architecture for a pop-up eye-wear store, to redesigning a physical therapy office, to developing a space for the Jeongok pre-history museum, this book is not a static review of past projects, but a space to bring together each one and in doing so to imagine an evolution to architectural practices today
